About Moberly, MO
Moberly, established in 1866, is named for railroad executive William E. Moberly. A prairie rail junction in north-central Missouri, it grew remarkably during the early years and came to be called “The Magic City.” It remains a railroad town today.
Recreational attractions include the Magic City Line miniature railroad in Rothwell Park. The area features a 3,000-acre buffalo farm, a winery and a stock car and truck dirt racetrack. The Five and Drive Theater is thought to be the nation’s only combined drive-in and cinema facility. Woodlands around Moberly provide diverse hunting opportunities.
Moberly is the home of two colleges, three dozen restaurants and numerous retail, specialty and antique shops. Several annual fairs are presented, including an Old Settlers Reunion and Railroad Days Fair. Cultural performances regularly are scheduled on campus and at Rothwell Park.
Moberly was the boyhood home of Gen. Omar N. Bradley. A U.S. Navy escort frigate during World War II was named for the city.
In addition to highway and rail access, Moberly is served by a municipal airport. It is about 30 miles north of Columbia’s regional airport.
Moberly today has a population of approximately 14,000. It is the largest city in Randolph County.
